| 2007-01-17 - This winter has been very poor of snow. The only time we have been able to use the sledge was on "SPHKs Nedre Norras KM" in Lillholmsjö the 6th and 7nd of January. For this we had to go more than 60 miles north. It was fantastic to drive the dogs on snow in front of the sledge. They did a very good job and I think they enjoyed it a least as much as I did. | "So just how does the dog driver drive? Surely some of the skills is conveyed in a musher's tone of voice, the patterns of movement. It's also a consequence of the musher's understanding of dogs, of the dynamics of rivalry and competition within the members of a team, and of the team's expectations for itself. It is, in short, a question of leadership. Any military commander can leap from a foxhole and yell Charge!, but only some are followed. Ultimately, the qualities of leadership are as mysterious as the colored dust on a butterfly's wings, or the crystalline shape of a snowflake. The slightest chink in attitude can spread through a dog team and destroy its will to pull as thoroughly as a crack can ruin a wineglass. Conversely, a single inspired dog can goad everyone else into action. Skillfull mushers are considered "doggy"." |
